Five Telegrams - Edinburgh International Festival

In 2018 as a part of the Edinburgh International Festival's Year of Young People, I along with other young designers, designed and made capes for the youth choir performing in that years Opening Ceremony. This project was in collaboration with 59 Productions and composer Anna Meredith.

The capes were inspired by those worn in the trenches in WWI to commemorate 100 years since the Armistice. We were asked to create contemporary textiles to apply to these capes using foils to reflect the lights held by the performers.

My textiles were inspired by the field postcards filled out by soldiers in the trenches. I created the patterns following the selections the soldiers made on each card along with their signatures, the only personalisation allowed on the postcards. These were abstracted and layered, mirroring Anna Meredith's piece which layered the choirs voices to represent the anonymous voices of the soldiers who risked their lives in World War One.
